Man arrested after woman’s death in Downend

A man has been arrested in connection with the death of a woman at a house in Downend.

Emergency services were called to an address in Overnhill Road shortly after 1.45am yesterday morning (Sunday 27 September).

A woman, in her 60s, was found with serious injuries and taken to hospital where sadly she died a few hours later.

A man, also on his 60s, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Superintendent Karen Corrigan said: “Our thoughts and sympathies go out to the woman’s grieving family at this devastating time for them. A specially-trained officer will be providing them with support going forward.

“A man was arrested yesterday morning. He is in police custody, where he is being interviewed under caution as we seek to further our understanding of the tragic events that unfolded.”

Supt Corrigan added: “Out of respect to the woman’s family, we’d please ask people not to speculate about the circumstances of what happened. We will provide further updates as our investigation progresses.

“We know this news will cause great shock in the local community, but we would like to reassure everyone that we do not consider there to be any ongoing risk to the public.

“People can though expect to see an increased police presence in the area over the coming days, both to provide reassurance and to carry out important and necessary enquiries as part of this murder investigation.

“If anyone has concerns then please speak to those officers in the area and they will be happy to talk to you and help.

“Similarly, we would ask anyone with information that may be able to assist our investigation to please come forward.”
