Policing plans in place for Taunton protest

Police are preparing for a planned protest and march taking place in Taunton town centre on Saturday 19 September.

The event is expected to begin at 1pm, and a significant police presence will be in place throughout the day to enable lawful protest, while helping to keep participants, residents and visitors to Taunton safe.

Officers will be operating under established policing plans and will take action against any criminal behaviour.

As part of the operation, a dispersal order under Section 34 of the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 will be active between 8am and 6pm. The order will apply to the area highlighted in the map below.

Dispersal powers are commonly used by police forces, including events where there is a risk of anti-social behaviour or criminality. They allow officers to direct individuals to leave an area if their behaviour is causing, or is likely to cause, harassment, alarm or distress.

Insp Andy Gloyn, from the Taunton Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Events of this scale are uncommon in Taunton, but Avon and Somerset Police has extensive experience in policing demonstrations safely and effectively.

“Our plans are designed to protect those attending, as well as the wider community, while keeping disruption to a minimum.

“The right to peaceful protest is an important part of a democratic society, but we will respond appropriately to any criminal activity.

“Neighbourhood officers will be on patrol in the town centre throughout the day and will be available to speak with anyone who has questions or concerns.”
