In cases involving sexual offences, schools and colleges should refer to local safeguarding policies. GOV.UK also provides guidance on:

• keeping children safe in education
• sexual violence and sexual harassment between children

In cases involving youth produced sexual imagery often known as “sexting”, schools and colleges may refer to the non-statutory UK Council for Internet Safety Sexting in schools and colleges guidance.

Operation Encompass

Every time our officers attend a domestic abuse incident, and children either live at, or are connected to the address, police have a statutory duty to share a notification of the incident with the child’s school, as quickly as possible. The reason for this is to ensure that children can get access to timely and appropriate support, through their school – this scheme is called Operation Encompass.

In May 2024, Operation Encompass was enshrined in UK Law, under the Victims and Prisoners Act. This made it a statutory duty for all police forces to share domestic abuse notifications with education partners.

Pilots are currently in progress in Bristol and Somerset to create a fully automated notification system. Once this process has been finalised and thoroughly evaluated, it will be rolled out to all five of our local authorities.

All Designated Safeguarding Leads in education settings are now required to take part in the free online Operation Encompass training, which is available for all staff in schools and education settings, including early years. This takes an average of 70 minutes to complete.

Pol-Ed

Pol-Ed offer free Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) lesson plans. Schemes of work are aligned with current policing priorities, the Department for Education (DfE) curriculum framework and Ofsted lines of enquiry.
