Civil claims – solicitors and insurance companies

How solicitors and insurance companies can request information for legal proceedings.

The UK General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) and Data Protection Act, allows the police to process personal data for legal proceedings and civil claims, prospective legal proceedings and the provision of or for obtaining legal advice.

The process

Stage 1 – for solicitors

This process must only be used for requesting additional information for civil legal proceedings, such as:

  • CCTV
  • Body Worn Video
  • Witness statements
  • Other relevant documents

If you are acting on behalf of a client in a complex case, we may ask for their consent to proceed.

You must provide your insured party’s consent before we can consider providing information to you for civil legal proceedings.

Once we have received your completed application form, fee and third party consent where appropriate, we will provide you with a list of information available.

There will be an additional charge for each requested item.

Charges are in accordance with the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) charging standards. However, we reserve the right to change some charges where appropriate.

On receipt of the final payment, the information will be securely sent to you.

We cannot accept liability for delays caused by circumstances beyond control where other lawful obligations need to be met.
