The recruitment process

Stage 1: Register your interest

When recruitment is open, you will complete our online eligibility form. This section checks your eligibility in line with our recruitment standards. You will be advised immediately after the questionnaire if you meet the required standard.

If you are 'referred' at this stage for an eligibility review, then a member of the recruitment team will contact you within one week of the closing date to advise you of the outcome of your review.

Stage 2: Application form

Once the eligibility stage has closed, if you have met the required standard you will be invited to fill in an application form and answer three competency based questions.

You will be notified within four weeks whether you have met the required standard for the application and questions section. You will then be invited into a SEARCH assessment centre which may take place in an assessment centre outside of Avon and Somerset Constabulary boundaries.

Stage 3: The assessment centre

SEARCH is the national process for assessing police officer applicants.

The assessment consists of five elements:

  • interactive role play
  • written test
  • verbal and logical reasoning test
  • numerical test and an interview

Applicants require a total of 50% and a pass in all of the assessments to pass this stage.

Stage 4: Pre-employment checks

All applicants require the completion of pre-employment checks prior to an offer of appointment.

These include:

  • record checks by the Professional Standards Department for any applicants currently working for the force
  • two satisfactory references for external applicants, one of these should be from the most recent employer
  • passing vetting checks including Counter Terrorist Check 
  • passing endurance fitness test with a minimum score of 5.4 on the Bleep Test
  • passing eyesight test to the required force standard
  • a drugs test 
  • biometrics clearance, including DNA and fingerprints
  • a body mass index score of under 30
  • a satisfactory result in a medical review with the constabulary’s Occupational Health team, ensuring that they are assessed as physically and mentally fit for the role
  • business interest checks
  • uniform fitting

Stage 5: Offer stage

Once all pre-employment checks are cleared, we will contact applicants with a final offer of appointment.

The applicant will receive a number of forms with their final offer letter which need to be processed before starting their course.

Applicants will be placed on the next available course.
